scs: sørenga bridge, oslo

The   product   of   the   radical   transformation,   which   the   City   of   Oslo   is   carrying   out   in   the   eastern   part   of   the   city centre,   part   of   which   has   been   the   placing   of   the   previously   elevated   motorways   which   cut   the   city   from   the water’s   edge   in   a   tunnel   under   the   fjord,   is   a   100   x   11   meter   piece   of   ex-motorway   called   Sørenga   Bridge. Bymiljøetaten,    a    department    of    the    Municipality    of    Oslo,    and    DogA    -    Norwegian    Centre    for    Design    and Architecture   approached   The   Scarcity   and   Creativity   Studio   to   design   a   project   which   incorporates   the   Sørenga Bridge   into   the   leisure   facilities   which   the   City   of   Oslo   is   building   in   the   areas   cleared   by   redevelopment.   Although Sørenga    Bridge    is    earmarked    for    demolition    it    is    hoped    that    the    SCS    temporary    intervention    will    convince authorities   that   it   is   worth   keeping   this   ‘urban   memory’   of   what   this   area’s   predominant   urban   landscape   used   to be like.
